Dementia Preventers – Hope or Hoax

Clarice C. Cook, March 29, 2017- According to the World Health Organization, dementia stats worldwide are estimating a jump from 47.5 million people with dementia in the world today to 75.6 million by 2030, and as high as 135.5 million by 2050.

“Yet..”  Mary Brophy Marcus, CBS News, Feb. 10, 2016 “New study shows signs of hope against dementia,” wrote…that in spite of reports that there is an “explosion in cases of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia as the population ages”.. “new research suggests some positive signs: the rate of new dementia cases is actually declining, and better heart health efforts may be making a difference.”

In the midst of all the confusion about the statistics, warnings or hope, we are bombarded with advice about how to prevent dementia.   Sadly, we are also subject to advertisements about over the counter or claimed FDA approved supplements guarantees brain boosting health.

Before you invest in these expensive cures, research the products the same as you should for any claim.  Is it snake oil or can this be a miracle that will guarantee you a super brain in just 90 days or less.

Consumers Reports did the research and found that most of these products don’t work effectively because the companies sell watered down versions of the active ingredients necessary for effective memory and focus.  Not only that, most of the ingredients listed on the labels are poor and low grade.  The researchers also found that products reviewed were being sold at over $100.00 a bottle.  That’s a big risk, even if there is a money back guarantee.  One product would not return the money on the first bottle, but required trying three bottles (3 months).

When you consider the health of the brain, how can you risk subjecting the three-pound organ that controls your life to chemicals that could do more harm than good.

Consumers Reports stated that in order to be effective the right ingredients at the balanced amount must be in each pill.  There are 5 critical ingredients that make a brain formula effective for improving memory, focus and mental clarity. The “Essential 5” Ingredients: DHA Omega 3 – to improve blood flow to the brain, reduce inflammation and the plaque, Huperzine A – to enhance general cognitive functions like memory and learning, Phosphatidylserine to slow down aging-related process and essential for maintaining cellular function, helping to improve thinking skill and memory, Bacopin to help repair damaged nerves in the brain and improves information processing speed, and N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine – a key component in the production of and transmission by neurotransmitters essential to memory.”

It is not only important to check labels on these products, it is essential to purchase from a company that produces more than one quality product.  The company should have a high integrity rating and a highly visible 800 number on the label. The product should have been tested by a third party and have a money back guarantee with no questions asked.

The most natural and cheapest ways to sharpen the brain are to be vigilant about exercising and have a good nutrition plan. For example:  Lots of water with a daily exercise routine of 30 minutes or more, a moderate amount of caffeine, blueberries, dark greens, and other brain boosting foods, and stress reducing activities can be just as effective as shelling out big bucks for products that may do more harm than good.  Add in fun brain boosting games and exercises daily as the icing on the cake.
